Sauk Prairie Airport Minutes
Board of Director's Meeting
July 6, 2006

Prairie du Sac Town Hall

7:00 PM

This meeting was held to report on the results of the June 17th Fly In of the Sauk Prairie Airport.  There were about twenty five people in attendance.  Dave Lukens started the meeting by thanking Curt Mueller for everything he and his staff have done.  His efforts and contributions were the reason for the successful event.  Dave also thanked Robin Bromley for contributing the remaining tee shirts that were given away free at the Witwen parade.  The event was considered a large success.  We learned many things to improve on and what not to do again.  There were no incidents or major problems and the grounds were kept very neat and clean.

The total proceeds from the event to date are $59,294.00.  This includes a $20,000.00 contribution from Mueller Sports.  This does not include a check for $162.00 from WW Helicopters or $88.50 from Wisconsin Aviation.  The breakdown of the receipts were:

   $20,000.00   Mueller Contribution

   $20,620.00   Raffle sales

   $11,316.00   Mission Control ticket sales

$  4,001.00   Juice Mobile ticket sales

$  2,614.00   Sale of food left over

$     743.00   Sale of soda left over

Estimated net income after bills are paid should be around $30,000.00.  Bills are still being received.  The Sauk Prairie Airport organization has paid their outstanding legal fees, the current years bank payment for the taxiway loan of $84,000.00 and all event invoices that have been presented to date.  Discussion followed about what to do with the profit.  Curt Miller suggested the group consider paying down the principal on the bank loan due to increasing interest rates.  He also recommended new lighting and a beacon for airport improvements.  The use of these funds will be discussed at the next regular meeting on Wednesday, July 19th at the Prairie Town Hall on Hwy 12 at 7 PM.

Some of the suggestions discussed for the next Fly In included having an event schedule available at the event with times and places of displays, not having an EAA breakfast the same day (perhaps having our own to attract planes), putting more prizes on the raffle tickets, and having another helicopter and plane for rides.  Curt recommended we not discuss all the issues at this meeting, but to put them in the form of a questionnaire and send to the members for input.  Several people had lists of suggestions and everyone is encouraged to send their ideas to Dave Lukens who will put them all together in a form.

Several people have complimented the event on how well organized it was.  The car parking was excellent and they received many good comments.  Bill McFarlane was recognized for his outstanding job with the parking of planes and controlling the landings and take offs.  He encouraged us to not have the EAA breakfast at the same time as they were understaffed and his crew did a lot of their work.

A date was set for next years Fly In as Saturday, June 23rd, 2007, with a rain date of Sunday the 24th.  Dave Landsverk reported that he had met with the D.O.T. in regards to construction at the Hwy 12 and PF intersection in 2007.  Work will not begin until after Labor Day and the Hwy 12 entrance to Curt’s hanger will not be effected in 2007.  Construction on the intersection will last 6 to 8 weeks.

Linda Wiedenfeld reported the raffle results.  The winner was Sherri Endres Lovell from Prairie du Sac.  Keith Ballweg sold over a quarter of all tickets sold including the winning ticket.  There were 2,062 tickets sold at $10.00 each for a total of $20,620.00.  The prize of a $2,500.00 travel voucher and the cost of tickets and printing brought our net income from raffle sales to about $17,500.00.

Bob Henry reported that they had 48 cars entered in the cars show.  He recommended starting earlier and advertisement and press releases to promote participation.   Virgil Schulenburg reported 48 cycles entered the cycle show.  Ron Lins reported 25 tractors entered.   We are anticipating more participants in the future.

Dave Landsverk read a letter from the EAA thanking us for letting them do their breakfast.  Dave reported that WW Helicopters gave 162 rides, thanked and complimented us on the excellent job we did.  They sent a check for $162.00 as our share of the ride agreement.  Wisconsin Aviation reported 59 plane rides and will be sending us a check for $88.50.  Dave recommended we have an additional helicopter and plane next year.  Many people commented that the rides were the reason they came.  Dave reported on a flashing beacon and pilot controlled runway lights.  The cost will run around $9,000.00 plus installation and a pole.  This will be presented at the next SPA meeting.  He also mentioned the progress of a GPS system, the process for obtaining it and steps to qualify.  Our airport is moving up the list and it is possible to have one within the next eight months.

Dennis Kirch suggested we try to get more participation from the SPA members and again mentioned the participation of Mueller’s employees that volunteered.   Al Checky was recognized for donating yellow sign material to the event.

Col. Cliff Johnson announced that the Civil Air Patrol has two seats available on a KC135 for a trip to Las Vegas on October 19-22.  He suggested we have a drawing among the volunteers for two people to go with them.  The flight will be free and their expense would be their room and spending money.  Anyone interested should contact Dave Lukens within 30 days for a drawing.

The next meeting of the Sauk Prairie Airport will be on Wednesday, July 19th at 7PM at the Prairie Town Hall. Everyone is welcome.
